About

This collection is largely comprised of songs that began to form while I was in a dream state.  “I’m Ready to Listen,” “Labor in Vain,” “In the Land Of I AM,” “Everywhere I Am” and “All Fades Into God,” all began in the wee hours of the morning.  Sometimes, only a melody and other times, a whole verse would visit me. When the gift of a song is presented in a dream, the trick is to remember that it is a dream, wake up and get to the piano right away. Later on, I would meet with Michael Beckwith, my songwriting partner and friend to finish the song, usually in one sitting. After gathering the songs from dreams and selections to complete the record, I went about choosing the greatest producer I could find and my search led me to the perfect match for the project, John Barnes.

John Barnes is one of those people it seems I have known for all my life. I really don’t remember when first we met, but you can bet that he does.  He doesn’t forget ANYTHING.  A most memorable moment (he recently recalled) had to do with a nasty look I shot to him as he played the keyboards during his first concert engagement with the Agape Choir. He tried to add “a little flavor” to a chord in one of the songs I had arranged.  That legendary, painfully disappointed look said it all… “If I had wanted to hear that I would have written that, but I DIDN’T.  So would you please play what’s on the paper!”? (The rest can be heard in the almost true oral tradition history of, “What really happens when you are in a band directed by Rickie.”)

However, on this project, John Barnes is the band director and arranger who brought a sound that opened the songs and my thought about them, to a whole new dimension. This CD reflects the big sound that recording to tape can deliver. It is a digital and analog recording complete with more exquisite musicians and singers the likes of Aubiman Kashual, Richard Piekoff, George Jackson, Jr., the legendary Al McKay, Kevin Renard, Niki Haris, Donna Delory, Brenda Lee Eager, Carl Anderson and Georgia Anne Muldrow.
